A Few Movies to Kick Back and Relax With

Our extreme relaxation syrup is designed specifically for you to pour up and sip slow. In this day and age, a bit of relaxation can be incredibly hard to come by. Between all of the obligations that we have on a daily basis and the errands that need to be run, it’s harder than ever to carve out some time to simply hang out and take it easy. When we do, we’re often bombarded with texts, social media notifications, and more.

That’s why it’s so important to take some time to take it easy. When you pour one of our relaxation drinks, why not set aside a few hours to watch a movie, uninterrupted by the distractions of daily life? You’d be surprised by how much of a difference it can make to settle in for a movie and be completely unhindered by everything else. So put your phone in another room, pour up some AKA Lean, sip slow, and kick back with a movie from our list of recommendations below.

Our Favorite Movies to Relax With

Finding the right movie to relax with can be a bit of a challenge. It needs to strike the right balance and unfortunately, a lot of modern movies just aren’t quite right. Not to worry, because the list below is designed specifically for relaxing. There are ups and downs, but the story stays fairly light and is always moving forward. Here are our picks.

Napoleon Dynamite

Whether you loved it or hated it back when it came out in 2004, Napoleon Dynamite was something of a cultural phenomenon for a period of time. The good news is that even if you didn’t care for it at the time, it’s held up pretty well and in retrospect, it’s a quirky movie with a number of genuinely funny moments. There is something weirdly charming about the adventures of Napoleon, Pedro, Kip, and even Uncle Rico that’s hard not to like.

The story is ideal for the times when you’re just looking to relax because of its great soundtrack, pacing, and odd story. If you’ve never seen this movie before, it’s time to check it out; if it’s been years since you watched it, rest assured that it has aged nicely.

Lady Bird

A contender for a number of different Academy Awards at last year’s celebration, Lady Bird was written and directed by Greta Gerwig and features an amazing performance from actress Saoirse Ronan as the titular character. A coming of age story, Lady Bird (the name that the main character gives herself during the film) navigates life as a high school senior who longs to get out of her town and experience college in a big city.

Rotten Tomatoes says that “Lady Bird delivers fresh insights about the turmoil of adolescence -- and reveals writer-director Greta Gerwig as a fully formed filmmaking talent.” It holds a 99% fresh rating on the aforementioned website currently, which is no small feat in this day and age. Debuting to critical acclaim and a great reaction from the audience, this story is not to be missed.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Do you ever find yourself yearning for an old fashioned kids story that’s been done right? Fantastic Mr. Fox is the perfect solution because it appeals to kids and adults alike. Its stop motion style makes it visually appealing while also offering plenty to love for pretty much anyone who watches it. Speaking of the film’s visual appeal, it’s important to know that it was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson, who was also responsible for The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Moonrise Kingdom, and others.

At the end of the day, if what you’re looking for in a film is an out-of-the-ordinary narrative about the life of a fox who just happens to be a master thief and his family, this one is hard to beat (mostly because it’s likely the only one in existence). With incredible voice performances from George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, and Jason Schwartzman, this film is a winner on every level.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Directed by Ben Stiller, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a film that adds up to be more than the sum of its parts. Although its trailers seemed to offer a film that strived for excellence, but fell short, the good news is that this movie actually succeeds wildly at its goal of motivating the audience to break out of their collective comfort zones and try something new.

The truth is that this film is often polarizing for viewers, as evidenced by its score of 51% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but our opinion is that if you sit back and let this movie take you along for the ride, you’ll find yourself inspired and awed. What better way to enjoy a day of rest and relaxation than with a movie like this?
