Our Favorite Video Games to Relax With

Journey

As Wikipedia sums up quite nicely, Journey is a game about “a robed figure in a vast desert, traveling towards a mountain in the distance.” That might not sound particularly interesting upon first glance, but ask anyone who has played this game and they will tell you that it’s much more interesting than any initial description might reveal. Much more than the sum of its parts, this is a game that quite literally takes players on a journey.

By controlling your nameless character through a variety of different settings, you start to develop something of a bond as you piece together a story that is told without using any words. It is truly an experience, and you can trust us when we say that you’ve probably never played anything quite like this game before.

Released to universal acclaim, Journey offers a truly unique way to relax to gamers who are interested in trying something a little bit different. In a world of first person shooters and zombie apocalypses, this game is a step in a completely different direction, and frankly, it offers something that other games cannot. Be sure to give it a try when you’re looking for ways to relax your mind.

Flower

Available on PlayStation devices as well as iOS devices, Flower is another game that is wholly unique and different from pretty much anything out there. Once again, we’ll turn to our friends at Wikipedia for a perfect description: “In Flower, the player controls the wind, blowing a flower petal through the air using the movement of the game controller” and ”flying close to flowers results in the player's petal being followed by other flower petals.” The go on to note that “Approaching flowers may also have side-effects on the game world, such as bringing vibrant color to previously dead fields or activating stationary windmills.”

This is another game that has no dialogue, and it also doesn’t have a traditional story structure, but when the point is relaxation, this is one game that gets the job done incredibly well.

This game made numerous best of the year lists when it was initially released and it has held up very well over time. As a matter of fact, it’s one that we go back to on a regular basis because it helps us to focus, providing us with the perfect opportunity for rest and relaxation that is made that much better with the help of our relaxation syrup.

Anything Old School

The modern options we mentioned above are great, but there’s something unique about old school games. What do we consider retro, you ask? In our opinion, you can go back as far as you’d like. If you’re playing on the original Nintendo Entertainment System (or NES), it’s hard to beat classics like Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, StarTropics, Dr. Mario, or Ice Climber. For the SNES, our picks are Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, NBA Jam, and Donkey Kong Country 2. N64 choices include Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros, or Wave Race 64.

Anything newer than that is still decidedly retro, and the good news is that there are plenty of classics for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube, and any others you choose to enjoy. One of the wonderful things about turning back to the classics is that they always bring about a flood of nostalgia and warm feelings that go hand in hand with relaxation. Whether you’re hooking up an old gaming console or breaking out a handheld device, taking a trip down memory lane is always fun. After all, what better way to relax than with a blast from the past?
