3 More Indie Albums to Relax With

by Brandon Bova August 01, 2018

If you’ve been following along with our blogs recently then you may have noticed a post in which we shared five of our favorite indie albums to relax with and it got us to thinking about just how important of a part music can play in people's’ lives. Figuring out how to relax your mind can be a big challenge but it has been proven time and time again that music is an ideal way to get into the right headspace.

That’s why in today’s post we’d like to share a few more albums to throw on as the perfect relaxation method. There are certain albums that just have a vibe to them that that makes them perfect to throw on when you need to chill out. While we can’t put our finger on exactly what the qualities that make for these albums are, we know them when we hear them. Here are a few of our favorites to enjoy next time you’re looking for ways to relax your mind.

Listen to These Albums to Relax Your Mind

Algiers by Calexico

This six year old album by Calexico represents a highlight in their discography. Although they have quite a few albums, this one perfects their unique “desert noir” sound. Wikipedia notes that “their musical style is influenced by traditional Latin sounds of mariachi, conjunto, cumbia and tejano mixed with country, jazz and post-rock.” In other words, this band has everything that’s necessary to create a relaxing atmosphere that is totally unique.

Named after the city in New Orleans in which the album was recorded, Algiers is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before, but at the end of the day we think you’ll appreciate it for its mellow mood and its interesting drive.

Is This It by The Strokes

Released in the summer of 2001, Is This It caused The Strokes to explode onto the music scene. Wikipedia lays out the story perfectly:

“[This album] was praised for its charisma and rhythm, which often referenced the works of 1970s garage rock bands. The record is considered crucial in the development of other alternative bands and of the post-millennial music industry. It has featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 2000s and of all time.”

A unique combination of musicians is what makes The Strokes different from other bands with a similar sound, and try as they may to replicate their success, other albums just don’t quite hold the same appeal as Is This It does. If you haven’t yet heard this album, put it on when you’re looking to relax and want to be taken on a journey by one of New York City’s greatest bands.

Singles by Future Islands

A relative newcomer to the music scene, Future Islands have nonetheless carved out a name for themselves because of their impassioned live performances, unique songwriting, and positive outlook. 2014’s Singles is a great starting point for those unfamiliar with the band and its leading track is sure to be stuck in your head for weeks.

A particularly unique live performance on The Late Show with David Letterman catapulted them to stardom thanks to dorky dance moves of lead singer Samuel T. Herring, but every track on Singles is a joy to listen to, try to decipher, and appreciate. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t get much better than that when you’re trying to enjoy a relaxing album.
